Frequently Asked Questions about serving in Africa

How can I get involved?
You can contact us about upcoming trips, coming alone, or bring a team of your own.

Can I fundraise for this trip?
Certainly. Many people raise money through family, friends and church members, or by conducting fundraisers such as bake sales, car washes, etc. There are many ways to raise the funds needed for the trip. Upon your acceptance, we will send you an information packet that provides additional fundraising information.

Where can I get more information about passports, immunizations, packing tips, etc.?
Once you have been accepted to an Ignite team, or you have registered a trip of your own, we will send an information packet that includes all this information and much more. Our goal is that you feel fully prepared for the trip.

Where will we stay?
Dependant on team size you may lodge on site with our missionaries or stay in local guest houses in or nearby the town of Harrismith, South Africa. Teams will sleep 2-6 per room in chalet/cottage style accommodation.

What will we do?
Our primary avenues of outreach include Relationship Evangelism and Children’s Ministry conducted in partnership with a local church.

Relationship Evangelism
Teams are divided into ministry groups of 3-5 people with an interpreter. Each ministry group gets its own area to target each day, visiting people in their homes. Ministry groups typically spend two days visiting each family, building relationships and helping with household chores. Their approach is a “Cultural Exchange”, a time to learn about the family’s way of life and to share about their own. This has proven to be a very effective ministry tool, opening people’s hearts to the Gospel.

One of the objectives of the Cultural Exchange is to leave each family with a tangible reminder of God’s love and care for them. Each ministry group will be given tools and seeds to plant a vegetable garden for each household they minister to.

Children’s Ministry
Each day one ministry group will spend the afternoon leading children’s ministry. The time is spent teaching the Word of God through songs, stories, games, and other activities. We will provide the curriculum and structure for the day, as well as a list of suggested items to bring.

Are there any age restrictions?
For our Ignite Student Trip you must be between 16 and 26 years old, and for our Ignite Adult trip you must be 18 years or older.  For church or organization led trips, members must be 18 years or older unless being accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our minimum age with a parent or guardian is 13.  Additionally, it is acceptable for the team leader to serve as the guardian.

What are the qualifications for this trip?
Other than being a born-again Christian with a heart to serve and share the love of Christ, there are no other qualifications. We will provide you with some cultural and ministry training prior to working in the village. Our goal is that you feel prepared while also stepping out to learn and experience new things.
